OMG Atelier

Branding an Architecture and Design Practice with Quiet Character

OMG Atelier came to us seeking a website, but halfway through we realised their branding didn’t best reflect who they were — curious thinkers and creatives outside the grid. Led by founder Hui Lian, the Singapore architecture and design practice works from the belief that ‘the house is a product, while the home is a process’. We wanted to interject “life”, in line with their ethos to create homes and not just a house.

The brand is made from Hui Lian herself: her handwriting, her upbringing and her own drawings of her cats, paired with sophisticated typography that keeps it quiet. Quiet with character was the direction we were going for.

OMG began as a spontaneous acronym for Overseas Malaysian Gang, and the studio plays with other readings of the letters. It is a nod to balancing play and utility, which is what we wanted the identity and the website to hold.

To add even more personality, we added in drawings from Hui Lian’s own drawings of her cats. They are strewn around the site, sitting between the blocks of text, a few small bits of life alongside the work and photography.

Her cats. Her drawings.

The layouts are kept clean, playing with a 2 and 3 grid system throughout the site. The structure stays quiet so the work and photography can shine.
